I don't think it's a particularly bad idea. It gains us some prestige (having our own domain name), but it locks Thor into being the webmaster forever? Once we have the domain name, anyone can host it, but that typically costs ~$50/month.
I don't follow how setting up a domain name makes me webmaster in perpetua. Once we set up the domain, we can always move the site to another ISP. As far as the costs go, I'm sure with all the computr and technical jobs the club members have, there got to be a paid for site to sit it on without club expense.
I checked what's available and here's the list to date:

Getting back to the main discussion though, it might not be worth the bother of setting up a new domain and all. The web site is working now and there's no direct evidence that the domain name will bring any real benefits to increasing membership.

.org is for non-profit organizations, and as far as I can tell, we're non-profit. Oh wait, BABO - we provide service for a price ... maybe we should be .com ? Dot confusion ...
I would like to increase the access speed, and having our own domain name is cool, but $35/year doesn't seem worth it. How many hits do we get now? How many more hits if we were draughtboard-dot-whatever? Is this just prestige? Efficiency? Membership generating? Is our web host kicking us out? It seems to me that this move is entirely discretionary. I'll have to agree, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
