Broken Drum
Brewery and Wood Grill

Broken Drum Brewery and Wood Grill is located in the heart of downtown San Rafael, adjacent to the old theater on Fourth St. Broken Drum brewery is the newest brewpub in San Rafael, down the street from Willow Street Pizza and brewery. This review was put together from notes I made after a visit in September with my old college friend called MOTOR.

The first thing that I noticed about the restaurant was that it had outdoor seating available. This consisted of about a dozen tables with umbrellas in them, all cordoned off from the sidewalk. I'm guessing this allows the restaurant to allow patrons to drink beer there without the bother of pedestrians and allow for the hot summer months that can sometimes occur in Marin.

Inside the restaurant are booths to the left and center. The main bar is on the right with a large Drum overhead at one end. The kitchen is at the back as well as the ordering station that patrons can put in their request for food. To help you visualize all of this, my friend made a quick sketch on a table napkin. Click here to see the  sketch of the layout.

My friend and I grabbed a seat at the booths on the  left. We quickly learned from the owners that they didn't yet have table service and that the food orders were taken and paid for at the kitchen. Once paid for, you got a number which you placed at the end of your table to inform the staff who gets what. Beer are similarly procured at the bar. Since I have been exposed to similar arrangements at other establishments like Triple Rock, Jupiter and Catos Ale house, this posed no inconvenience.

The beer that I had there where as follows with notes:

IPA- Fruity. Not too bitter. Clear and clean. Refreshing

Wheat- Clean American style. Has a crispness akin to the Pilsner Urquell taste.

Mild- Carmel Malts. Bitterness from Grain. OK.

As for the meal, I had the Burrito with Salmon and was impressed. It came filled with salsa, pineapple and a light amount of wasabi, a spicy Japanese green "mustard" that balanced well with the salmon flavor. I included a scan of the actual menu with a map for those interested in all the details.

Prices: Inexpensive
Atmosphere: Clean new booths. It was more like Tied house in being efficient but not really warm. The outdoor seating might be a little better. I guess I prefer that old pub feel myself.
Overall: I like the place and will probably return when I'm in the area. Beer was good but not exceptional. Food was very good and inexpensive. The place is still small and you can get to see it grow up.
