Beer News

Hey kids-

Three interesting items just came my way.

1. From Paul at Coit Liquors- Anchor will soon have a new beer out. A "small" beer from the runnings of Foghorn. Huh? "Big" beers, mostly barleywines, get all their umph from using a shitload of grain. When all this grain has done its duty for the barleywine, there are still a lot of sugars left that could be used to make a "smaller" beer. Nowadays, most of the time the grain from the first run of beer is simply tossed out. But in the past, it was re-used to make a small beer. Today, Hair of the Dog Brewery, in Portland, makes Ed from their Fred beer. Looks like Anchor is joining the game.

Paul says that it should hit shelves "any day now..."

2. Chronicle Food Section reports that Barley and Hops has closed. The owner claims the smoking ban did him in. I suggest the beer was better up the street at Steelhead, and furthermore, the food went down hill from the day it opened, with the menu shrinking form its one-time glory. Originally, they had a great selection of BBQ and smoked meats, including Brisket and a bithcin' Prime Rib. That all was gone at least a year ago, if not longer. Hopefully someone can get into it, because the City of San Mateo put a ton of money into the place to get it going. (Jaime- Jupiter of San Mateo?)

3. Also from the Chron- Gordon Biersch will be rolling back its beer prices to 1988 levels at all pubs this weekend in celebration of its tenth anniversary. What would that price be? Guesses? I'm going for $2.25.......

Burp....
