1998 AHA Style Guidelines Changes

Good news - the 1998 AHA style guidelines are finally posted on the internet. Unfortunately, AHA never tells you what changed from 1997. This article reports the changes ("delta") between 1997 and 1998. If you don’t see a particular style category, then nothing has changed.

I always like to know the reason for changes. Some are plain old corrections (FG=1.0018 should be 1.018). Some are due to rounding (2.5 becomes 3, or vice versa). Some are split categories (Belgian-Style Strong Ale split into two categories; Pale and Dark). Some are combined categories (English-Style Old Ale/Strong Ale now includes Very Strong Ale). Some didn’t make sense (IBU numbers for Mead). The SRM/EBC conversions are so entirely different that I suspect a new formula was used. Some may be new typographical errors. Some have changed very little; some have change a lot. Some have changed identity (what was category 2g is now category 2h).

Well, gee whiz, a whole bunch of numbers (yawn). Why should I care? The point is that the style you may be familiar with may now be stronger or more bitter or darker, or have tighter ranges, or be split into new categories. If you use brewing calculation software, now you can populate the database with the most current values.

So, without offering any explanation for the changes, here are the new and old numbers:
