Anchor Party

by John Pyles

Mike Wood, Roger St. Denis, Tom Baird, and I went to the Anchor dinner this year. Thanks to the club for the opportunity to go.

Tom, Mike and I took BART, just to be on the safe side. As Tom and I emerged from the station in SF, we saw a drug buy in progress involving a syringe, hookers, and signifying whackos. Couldn't wait to get on the bus. The bus driver was apparently deaf since she didn't want to respond to the buzzer where we wanted to get off.

We arrived safely and waited outside for the doors to open along with the other expectant diners. The winning Maltose Falcons were staying in local hotels and began to arrive in limos - a nice way to go.

The usual large crowd was there. The open bar was great. They had smaller plastic cups this year, so for whoever goes next year I would recommend you take a glass of your own to cut down on trips to the bar.

The BBQ was good - steaks, chicken, corn, salad, bread ... They had plastic forks. Roger had to eat with his hands since he had too much muscle for his fork. I was lucky enough to get a loaner of real utensils from the Dunham's. If you go next year, take a knife and fork.

After our interesting trip to the event, Tom and I took a taxi to a safer BART station down town for the ride back. Before getting on BART, we couldn't resist one for the road since the taxi let us off in front of the Palace Hotel on Market. Thanks for the beer, Tom.

Hope everyone else had a good time. I know I did, and I think Tom did.
