Celebrating 20 years of Homebrewing

March 1997, Volume 20, Issue 3

1997 National Babo

by John Pyles

BABO '97 was a success in my book. After losing our long-term venue, and questioning whether we wanted to continue, we found a great new place for the event and involved more and different people in organizing the event.

We had 104 entries from 64 entrants which is a growth of 10% over last year - there is something nice about triple digits. The entries came from California, Texas, Tennessee, Wyoming, Washington, Oregon, and Colorado. This was truly a national competition.

HopYard Alehouse, HopTech, and HopTown were enthusiastic and very helpful in sponsoring the event. We owe them a big THANK YOU! We also had a wider range of prize sponsors this year. Bill Millar of San Andreas Brewing came through again with a beautiful shirt for first place. Thanks Bill. Brewmaster who has supported our club in many ways for many years again supplied a prize. Thanks Tom Baird. We got great prizes from The Beverage People, Golden Pacific, Certified Foods, and Oak Barrel.

Roger St. Denis took over from Bob Jones as Registrar. Bonnie Setzer assumed the Chief Steward position from Charlie. Both did a great job dealing with the increased details of operating in a new place. Bruce Brazil took on getting prizes and got us a great array. Ken Koupal handled the pre-competition mailing again this year. His efforts contributed to our growth. Perhaps our longest tenured official is the scorekeeper, Harry Graham who inputs all the entry details, tracks the scores on the day of the competition, and mails out all the results. Thanks Harry. Hope I didn't miss anyone, but thanks to all those who helped.

Ron Thomas of Oregon won two first places, Micah Millspaw won a first and a second, and Al Branch won a second and a third. Other club winners were Joe Setzer, Harry Graham, Tom Altenbach, and Bob Jones who took firsts. Jerry Burke took a second and Bruce Brazil a third. Congratulations!

Thanks again for all those who helped out. We got a lot of input on improvements which will make next year even better.

Thanks to Harry Graham who has posted the complete results at:
